Live Well Lakewood
When I got back from my Today Show appearance a friend of friend contacted me about wanting to start a fitness program in our lovely lakeside community. One phone call and then the next thing you know there is a merry band of 4 women trying to get the people in our city to live a healthier life. I haven’t been one to get involved in civic matters until now and this project is near and dear to my heart. I have made new friends especially Norma Collin, Paula Reed and Bonnie Sikes.

Live Well Lakewood’s Health Fair

All three of us got to meet Joy during our Today Show appearance when we were inducted in the Joy Fit Club for people that have lost more than 100 pounds. Shelley Napier has lost 206 pounds, Lisa Griffis has lost 200 pounds and Kathy Stewart lost 146 pounds. We all learned a great deal from Joy and we used the information to get back to our weight loss maintenance programs. We all agreed that losing weight was the easy part of our journeys. Keeping the pounds off is still hard for each one of us.

Shelly, Kathy and Joy before her talk. It was great to listen to them talk about food and weight loss.

1,000 people came to Live Well Lakewood's first event. A health fair that brought together all the vendors in town that focus their businesses on helping people become healthier. Nature's Bin, our local health store was there passing out samples of their wonderful products.

Dr. Roizen of the Cleveland Clinic and the popular You books helped Mayor FitzGeraldd kick off the health fair.

Borders Books set up shop in the school's library to sell Joy's and Roizen's books along with other fitness items.

The best part of the day was getting to spend time with my friend, Joy. Her compassion to help people is truly inspiring. Her book is on my kitchen cabinet to remind me to eat right. Plus it is filled with wonderful recipes.
LAKEWOOD MAYOR ANNOUNCES HEALTHY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
On December 15, 2008, at the regularly scheduled Lakewood City Council Meeting, Mayor Ed FitzGerald will announce the formation of the Healthy Lakewood Partnership (HeLP). This partnership will help design and implement a comprehensive community wellness program, with special emphasis on health factors such as physical activity, diet and nutrition and smoking cessation. The object is to bring every Lakewood community organization together to focus on a city-wide public health strategy. The goal is to elevate the healthy habits of every workplace and every family residing in Lakewood.
“More and more, healthy lifestyles and community wellness are being recognized as a goal which progressive communities should aspire to,” stated Mayor Ed FitzGerald. “With all that we now know about the consequences of unhealthy lifestyle choices, I believe it is incumbent upon us to leverage all of the public and non-profit resources of this city and integrate them into a city-wide public health strategy. The Healthy Lakewood Partnership is the first step to achieving this goal.”
